Jemma Rix - Gravity

I have been pining for an album from Jemma Rix for years. Ever since I saw her perform the role of Elphaba in Wicked the Musical I have been a massive fan of Jemma's so it gives me great joy that this album finally became a reality.

The tracks included on the album are a great mix of songs from musicals that Jemma has previously performed in such as Wicked and Ghost along with the ill fated Jekyll and Hyde which unfortunately never got to see the light of day as well as a number of other musical theater tunes that resonated with Jemma in some way or another.

My personal favourite tracks are Defying Gravity, Someone Like You and Somebody to Love. These songs I feel really allow Jemma to showcase her incredible vocal range the most. Every time I listen to them I still get chills and am amazed at how high that voice can go.

I think for me what makes some of these songs resonate so deeply is having seen Jemma perform the songs before on the stage and being able to relive those moments and feelings that I experienced at the time. And also the fact that none of Jemma's shows have ever had their own cast recording it's really nice to have a few of these songs recorded.

The two duets included on the album included Rob Mills singing Falling Slowly from Once and Kane Alexander singing Dangerous Game from Jekyll and Hyde. Both duets are well done and find their place on the album nicely. Although it would have been nice to have seen a duet of For Good with Lucy Durack (we can't have it all!!).

All in all, this album is a very solid first outing especially for an independent album. It shocks me that no record label wanted to work with a talent like Jemma. Hopefully this is not the last album we see from Jemma as I believe there is so much more wealth to be tapped into.

If you'd like to purchase Gravity you can do so by heading to http://jemmarix.com/ or iTunes.
