Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the film iteration of Frozen and I can tell you I was beyond excited when it was announced that it was going to be adapted into a Broadway musical.
Frozen The Broadway Musical opened at the St James Theatre in March 2018 and stars Caissie Levy as Elsa, Pattie Murin as Anna, Jelani Alladin as Kristoff, John Riddle as Hans and Greg Hildreth as Olaf.
One of the great things about the musical is that the story isn’t a straight retelling of the plot from the film. Characters motivations and inner thoughts are explored in much greater detail leading to a narrative that at times can be much darker than what was featured in the film, especially for Elsa.
A staggering 12 new songs have been written for the musical alongside 9 songs that featured in the film. Out of all of these new additions, Monster easily stands out for me as a fantastic act 2 number. The soliloquy ballad sees Elsa ask herself if she is evil due to her magical abilities and wonders if the world would be better without her. In my opinion it hands down stands up against the likes of Let It Go and of you haven’t already give the track a spin on Spotify or iTunes.
The other really big selling point for Frozen The Broadway Musical is it’s visual effects. You can see a lot of time and effort has been put into the production to ensure that they get the Disney magic just right and they really did nail it. The snow and ice effects in particular wether they were visual projections or practical props and effects all looked so stunning and striking, firmly placing you in the frosty environment that Arendelle.
Caissie Levy and Pattie Murin are honestly the most perfect choices for Elsa and Anna. They both share the perfect sisterly chemistry that instantly makes you care and feel invested in them and both of them can sing their faces off, especially Caissie who can belt for days.
It’s only a matter of time before the Disney AUNZ juggernaut brings this production down under and I couldn’t be more excited for the inevitable announcement. And if they don’t cast Jemma Rix as Elsa and Lucy Durack as Anna I’ll be so disappointed!! If you’re in the New York area and haven’t seen the show yet definitely give it a go because at face value it might seem like it’s just for the kids but I can tell you that adults will totally get a kick out of it as well.
