Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You

I've been a longtime fan of the Pokemon series since the old days when the games came out on the GameBoy. My first game was Pokemon Yellow and I can vividly remember getting up at the crack of dawn every weekday morning to watch the anime. So when I found out that they were making a movie out of the first episode of the show, it was an instant yes I must see this the second it comes out.

Released as the twentieth Pokémon movie and the first film in the Sun and Moon series, it acts as a loose retelling of the original Indigo League saga of the show and was released to commemorate the anime's twentieth anniversary.

The movie explores Ash and Pikachu’s first meeting and their adventures as they search for the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh. The pair encounter some familiar faces along the way, new characters including Trainers Verity and Sorrel, and even a mysterious new Mythical Pokémon, Marshadow.

The film starts off very strongly with the retelling of the moment Ash received Pikachu from Professor Oak along with a few more classic moments that were for the most part faithfully recreated and achieved nearly the same emotional response that I felt while watching the anime as a kid.

The animation was truly wonderful and in comparison to the quality back in the day of the original anime you can see just how far we’ve come in terms of technological advances. Everything popped off the screen and looked very crisp and clean.

There were however a number of key inconsistencies with regards to the story that fans of the original anime will find confusing and frustrating. These moments really took me out of the moment, made me question why these narrative changes were made and really tarnished any kind of nostalgia I was beginning to feel.

A special Pikachu promo trading card game card was given out in conjunction with the film which was fantastic and took me back to the days when the first two films were released and promo cards given out as well #nostalgia

The film progresses really well up until about the final 20 minutes where one key moment in my opinion totally ruins the whole movie experience and from that moment on the plot becomes very confusing and convoluted which was very disappointing. The film is pitched at children but even I had trouble understanding what was supposedly going on.

Pokemon The Movie: I Choose You is a decent film but key plot changes from the original anime and the final act really let down the movie as a whole. But even with these disappointments I still enjoyed it and it was a good laugh. If you’re a long time Pokemon fan you should check it out for the lols and if you’re new to Pokemon I’d suggest you go watch the first season of the anime.
