Justice League takes place months after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and inspired by Superman's sacrifice for humanity, Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) unite a team consisting of Barry Allen (The Flash), Arthur Curry (Aquaman), and Victor Stone (Cyborg) to face the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons, who are on the hunt for three Mother Boxes on Earth, while the world continues to reflect and mourn Superman's passing.
After the absolute disaster that was Batman vs Superman I had some reservations coming into this film. Was it going to be a repeat of that? or we past mistakes going to be learnt and improved upon? It's safe to say that Justice League was a fun and enjoyable outing but unfortunately it lacked any kind of substance.
The best aspects of Justice League are the chemistry between the core cast of heroes. They all gel together so well and whenever the five of them are on screen together the film shines spectacularly. Wonder Woman always stands as the voice of reason, The Flash provides quite humourous comic relief and Cyborg adds an interesting take on the contemporary super hero. Ben Affleck is substantially better in this film but still seems somewhat disinterested in playing the roll of Batman and maybe it is a sign that he may not want to stick with the character.
The story that the heroes are fighting through is a bit of a mess at times, paired with a villain who is sadly quite unforgettable. He never seems as threatening as he really should be and you never feel as though any of the good guys are in any kind of danger.
The film spends too little time establishing the backstory of the new heroes that we have never seen before on the big screen and it begs the question, did we need a Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg films before Justice League? I believe we did. I think it would have made them much more impactful and you wouldn't have had to waste time trying to quickly form and construct these new characters.
If you haven't been living under a rock you'd have known that Superman was going to make a return in Justice League. The way in which he comes back is justifiable and makes sense with regards to the overall plot of the film. It just would have been more exciting and meaningful if this plot point could have been kept a secret until the films release.
The action found in Justice League was well choreographed and executed. It all flowed beautifully and never seemed crowded. The set pieces packed a punch but never overstayed their welcome and allowed each of the heroes unique abilities to be shown off in adequate fashion.
The really wonderful thing about Justice League is that no one hero hogs the limelight. They all work together in succinct way that allows each of them to have their moment in the sun but no one outshines the other, which is how it should be.
Two post credits scenes are featured in Justice League, with one providing a humerous end to the film and the other providing a very intriguing look into the future. Both a must watch after the credits have rolled.
Justice League is a great movie if your a fan of the superhero genre. It's got amazing action sequences and a cast of characters that are extremely likable. The only thing that really lets it down is the lack of any real progression with regards to the overall scheme of the plot at large. Is Justice League better than Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad? Hell yes. Is it better than the Avengers? Not quite, but it's most definitely on the right path and is catching up quickly. Does it deserve a 39% on Rotten Tomatoes? No way. It deserves a better go than that and people who can't see that may need to watch the film again. This movie paired up with the quality film that was Wonder Woman has well and truly put DC back on track and hopefully they continue to tick majority of the boxes in years to come.
