Apart From Everything is a Canadian short film directed by Ben Lewis and stars Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany as Fran who after a two-year absence and a recent stint in rehab, returns to face the emotional fallout of her disappearance and make amends with the girlfriend and the brother she left behind.
The film runs for approximately 20 minutes and a large time frame of plot is told through smartly placed flashbacks to the past and flash forwards to the present day that allows a lot to occur in the limited screen time the genre allows.
The plot itself is pretty basic and at times lacked direction but the real star of the film was Maslany. This was another vintage performance that again showcases her amazing talent and acting range. Her ability to show emotions across the entire spectrum never ceases to amaze me.
Apart From Everything is one of those short films that I wish could be turned into a proper full length feature. It ends on a point, like most short films do where you want to know more and continue to see where the story goes, which is a real credit to the writer and director as that can be a difficult thing to achieve with a short film.
I can’t say I watch many short films but it’s safe to say that Apart From Everything is good if you enjoy strong acting performances. Please give Tat Mas all the awards.
