The Good Place

The Good Place is one of those gems you find when you’re flicking through Netflix desperately trying to find something new to binge. None of my friends had recommended it to me and I hadn’t seen anything about it on any of my social media channels. And now, I can’t stop telling everyone how fantastic it is!!

The Good Place follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), a woman who wakes up in the afterlife and is introduced by Michael (Ted Danson) to "The Good Place", a Heaven-like utopia he designed, in reward for her righteous life. She soon realizes that she was sent there by mistake and must hide her morally imperfect behavior and try to become a better person. It’s such a unique plot that hasn’t been tapped into before and really helped to suck me into the world it was trying to create.

The show is executive produced by Michael Schur of Parks and Recreation fame and the comedy present shows, it’s hilariously funny and in the best way possible where you don’t see the jokes coming, they randomly hit you in the face and leave you laughing uncontrollably. While mainly being billed as a comedy, The Good Place also allows itself to be quite dramatic and thought provoking at times as well which is so refreshing and unexpected for the genre.

The cast is amazing. Kristen Bell and Ted Danson are obvious standouts both providing humour and heart to their characters that make you feel very much attached and invested in them. The rest of the supporting cast including, William Jackson Harper as Chidi Anagonye an ethics professor who was born in Nigeria and raised in Senegal, Jameela Jamil as Tahani Al-Jamil a wealthy philanthropist who traveled extensively around the world, D'Arcy Carden as Janet a programmed guide who acts as the neighborhood's main source of information and Manny Jacinto as Jianyu Li a silent Buddhist monk from Taiwan are all so much fun to watch and all share an electric chemistry that really gives the show its life.

The half an hour length of the show also makes it so appealing to binge and I found myself being sucked in quickly and never looking back. The Good Place also boasts many great guest star appearances from the likes of Adam Scott and Maya Rudolph who give the show that extra little oohmph.

If you haven't checked out The Good Place before I highly suggest you do. It's full of good laughs and unexpected twists and turns that will keep you coming back for more time and time again.

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Good Place are now available on Netflix.
