The Titan

The Titan is a science fiction thriller Netflix original film directed by Lennart Ruff and stars Sam Worthington as Lieutenant Rick Janssen and Taylor Schilling Rick’s wife Dr. Abigail Janssen.

The film takes place in 2048, on Earth which has become overpopulated and ridden by violent conflicts. Scientists then begin looking to Saturn's moon Titan as a new home for humanity. Rick Janssen, a war pilot who survived for 3 days in the Syrian desert without food or water, is chosen to be a part of an experiment that forces humans to adapt to the surface of Titan, due to his past ability to survive in extreme conditions.

The Titan starts off very promisingly with the concept of moving humanity to Titan an enteresting plot point. However, as the film progresses it devolves into an ugly and confusing mess that left me feeling pretty disappointed.

The Titan ends up being like The Shape of Water 2 Electric Boogaloo. Instead of focusing more on how you would go about colonising Titan the film hones in far too much on the relationship between Rick and Abigail causing the overall drama to fall pretty flat.

Sam Worthington was shockingly bad. His performance was dull and lacked any kind of real emotion. I feel like he was a one hit wonder with Avatar. Nothing he’s done since then has ever been as good. It has me a tad worried for the sequel to be honest. Maybe it’s time he went back to bricklaying.

The real shining light that can be found within The Titan is Taylor Schilling. She’s such an outstandingly underrated actress who deserves more recognition. Her ability to show intense emotions made Worthington look like such a weak link.

Overall, The Titan is your standard sci-fi flick that’s worth checking out if you’ve sucked Netflix dry and have nothing fresh to watch. Is it the worst film I’ve seen in a while? Probably. But there’s still enough decent stuff in among all the rubbish that makes it passable.
