Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human is the latest game by French studio Quantic Dream, makers of Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls. It is best described as a chose your own adventure movie with the narrative the driving force behind the game.

Written and directed by David Cage, Detroit: Become Human is set in Detroit 20 years in the future in the year 2038. The city has been revitalized by the invention and introduction of androids into everyday life. But when androids start behaving as if they are alive, events begin to spin out of control. Step into the roles of the story’s pivotal three playable characters. Connor, a police investigator android tasked with hunting down androids that have deviated from their programmed. Kara, a newly created housekeeper android who develops artificial consciousness and Markus, a caretaker android who, after gaining consciousness, takes it upon himself to free others like him from bondage. Each of the main characters have their own unique perspectives and abilities as they face their new way of life. Depending on player's choice, all playable characters can die in the course of the story. Therefore, the story can continue without any of them which makes for an exhilarating and extremely high stakes story that at times will have you on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding out of your chest.

The gameplay found in Detroit: Become Human is extremely simple. You move your character around a defined area and have the opportunity to interact with various aspects of the environment using very innovative rotations of the control stick to mimic movements such as opening a door or picking up an object. The touch pad found on the Playstation 4 controller was also put to good use as a means to flick through pages and start videos. While simple, these controls added to the immersive nature of the story. Although, there were motion controls that I did find a bit finicky at times. Along with this, Detroit relies heavily on quick time events which can make or break your game. As the game progresses these QTEs get faster and harder and add to the growing tension and drama. I'm not normally a fan of QTEs but they worked well here in Detroit.

I found the main three characters of Detroit to be very compelling and likable. I quickly became invested in them all and my need for them to all make it to the end alive became my sole goal. The amazing thing about Detroit is its replay value. There are so many different ways that you can go about playing the story and after finishing my first playthrough I immediately wanted to play again to see another ending.

The graphics are amazing and you can just see the immense time and effort that was put into the mocapping and editing. I continue to be astounded by the level of detail studios are achieving in their games.

Detroit: Become Human is a game for people who love a good story with high stakes. If you have a Playstation buy this game it's one of those games that I think everyone should play and it's a game that could be a hell of fun to play cooperatively with a group of friends, influencing and laughing at the choices you all make.

Playstation just continue to hit home runs with their exclusive titles and I'm LOVING IT!!

4/5
