The Phantom Of The Opera is a musical that my mum has raved about for years after she saw it in Melbourne many years ago with the late great Rob Guest in the role of the Phantom. It was because of this and the fact that Phantom is the longest running Broadway show in history that I knew I need to include it during my visit to New York City.
The Phantom Of The Opera opened in 1988 and has been going strong for the past 30 years performing to almost 13,000 audiences. The production currently stars Ben Crawford as The Phantom, Eli Ewoldt as Christine and Jay Armstrong Johnson as Raoul.
Going into Phantom I didn’t really know much of the plot so I was totally taken aback by the opening of the first act. I loved how it began very inconspicuously without much fanfare and then exploded into the main overture accompanied by the massive chandelier. That theme with the booming organ was easily a standout for me.
I haven’t been exposed to many Operetic style shows before but I thoroughly enjoyed this style of music that I wouldn’t typically be into. The vocal ability of the cast blew my mind. The way they sung reverberated through you, it was so amazing.
I am so glad that I took the time to see Phantom and can now say that I’ve seen the longest running show in the history of Broadway. If you ever get the opportunity make sure you check out The Phantom Of The Opera, you won’t regret it.
